The County of Povoação, with an area of approximately 110.30 km2, is located in the eastern part of the southern coast of the island, lying 60 km from the city of Ponta Delgada. It is bordered by the counties of V. Franca (West), Ribeira Grande (North) and Nordeste (East). The county consists of six villages (Povoação, Furnas, Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, Ribeira Quente, Água Retorta e Faial da Terra) and has about 7000 inhabitants.
The village of Povoação, was where the first settlers set on the island of São Miguel and is the largest of the County with 2,424 inhabitants. It also consists of the center, the surroundings - Comissão e Morro - and Lombas do Cavaleiro, Carro, Botão, Pomar e Pós.
The festivities in honor of the patron saint, Our Lady Mother of God, held on the first weekend of September, when many migrants return to spend the holidays with family. The local food specialities are fervedouro and liver sauce with yams or sweet potatoes and the famous "Povoação Eclair" typical sweet this of the village.
Local craftsmen are dedicated mainly to corn dolls, paper flowers, rag quilts, lace, embroidery, work in fish scale and stonework.
The most important visit sights includes the Municipal Garden, the Wheat Museum, the churches of Our Lady Mother of God and Our Lady of the Rosary, classified as property of public interest because it was the first parish church of island of São Miguel, the Zoological Park, the monument Porta do Povoamento and viewpoints from where you can admire stunning panoramic.
